10:55a - An update
Wow, it's been over a week since I updated this journal! I'm a bad, bad man!
But it's been a good week. My story at Strange Horizons got an incredible response from those who read it. It's still up for another few weeks before heading into the archive, so check it out if you haven't already.
Tomorrow, my story "Jarring" should be up on the-phone-book.com -- should be a fun site. I'll let you know if it goes up on time.
Well, the World Horror Convention is over, and from what I've seen so far, I'm not upset that I skipped it. Sure, everyone had a grand old party, but did any real business get done? I don't think so. And don't get me started on the Stoker Awards. The Stoker system is incredibly flawed, and you can not tell me that the recipients of this year's awards were unequivocably the best in horror for the last year. I don't want to take anything away from those who did win, but come on, we all know the final vote was probably about 30 people (like last year), and that everyone voted for their friends. That's hardly a way to pick the best of the best.
There's so much good horror out there -- books like HOUSE OF LEAVES or movies like REQUIEM FOR A DREAM -- that the Horror Writers Association completely ignores, because it's "hidden" in the mainstream. If it doesn't show up on "horrorville's" tiny little radar screen, it doesn't exist. And the HWA is such a tiny little blip on the rest of the world's radar screen, that those who are writing and producing real horror don't even know the group exists, and don't care. The Stokers should be bringing thousands of new readers to the horror field. Someone please tell me how this year's awards are going to do that?
Oh well. I've dropped out of HWA, and most other writers' groups and conventions, for this year and maybe next. I'm only interested in producing new writing that pleases me. Everything else is just a distraction.
Man, this ended up being a rather negative entry! Scary!
Okay, I'm off -- to write, while everyone who was at WHC still nurses their hangovers. See you later!
