9:55p - Word Down
Tonight brought emailed galleys for a short story of mine that will appear in an upcoming anthology, which I was happy to proof and turn right back around to the editor. It's the first real writing-related activity I've been able to accomplish in almost a week, after a horrible computer crash knocked me out of action for a few days.
Don't worry, I didn't lose any files, but I did lose a lot of writing time. Every time I opened Microsoft Word, the program or the PC would crash. Sure, I could have opened up a text editor, or just hand-written things for some of that week, but I was determined to find out what was wrong with my damned PC. Unfortunately, my PC was determined to block my success at every turn. I tried every diagnostic trick I could think of, but no solution. Finally, on Sunday, after five hours of tinkering, I Googled a few of the error messages I was receiving and found a message board entry that solved my problem. Turns out that everything on my computer was working just fine, with the exception of one teeny tiny component of Word. The program itself was untouched, but the blank document template that it relies on had somehow been corrupted. And that killed any hope of Word actually working.
Once I found the solution, it took me all of seventeen seconds to get up and running again. Of course, by then it was almost midnight on Sunday, and a full work week loomed for Monday morning.
What a waste of my time.
Good thing I solved it when I did. I was ready to call up Dell and order a brand-new PC. One little 8k file almost cost me $1k for a new computer. Sigh...
Oh well. Everything's back up and working, as am I. Thank god.
Okay. Back to work...
