4:57p - Pow-wow photos

Voladores pole dancers, originally uploaded by JohnPlatt.

Great day down at the Rankokus Indian Reservation in Westampton Township, NJ. If you're in the area tomorrow, you should go.

11:31p - Quickie comics reviews
With my stomach on the fritz after too much fry bread at the pow-wow this afternoon, I decided to skip writing tonight to catch up on some comic-book reading. I'm glad that I did. Here are the results...

A Dummy's Guide to Danger # 1 -- Wackiest book I've read in a long while. A bloody PI story starring a ventriloquist and his dummy (whom he thinks is his real, live partner). The full story doesn't live up to the concept, but I look forward to the next issue.

Kabuki: The Alchemy # 7 -- David Mack's series gets further and further from the tone of its early stories with each passing issue. Thank god. While the storytelling pace of this latest series is glacial, the storytelling itself is brilliant.

Dwight T. Albatross's The Goon Noir # 1 -- What do you get when you combine Patton Oswalt, Mike Ploog, Bill Morrison, Steve Niles, Ryan Sook and Thomas Sniegoski with "Goon" creator Eric Powell on an anthology series featuring his zombie-bashing character? A surprisingly unfunny comic. The disappointment of the evening.

Solo # 5 -- Several months old, but I finally read this issue by writer/artist Darwyn Cooke. Easily the best issue of this great, already cancelled, series. I'll definitely be checking out Cooke's revamp of Will Eisner's "The Spirit" in a few months.

Supernatural Law # 40 and Supernatural Law Big 1st Amendment Issue -- I've been holding off on reading these for some stupid damn reason (# 40 is at least two years old), but was rewarded with enough puns and clever character work to remind me why this is one of my all-time favorite comics. Not familiar with it? Check out the webcomics version.
