9:50a - Quickie comics reviews II
An odd little assemblage of books has landed in my mailbox over the past two days. I read a few of them yesterday, to mixed results:
The Titusville Geek by Pat Lewis ( lunchbreak_pat) -- a fun little mini-comic, nicely drawn with one four-inch square panel per page. A quick read (a spin on the old scary campfire story), excellently drawn. Is a one-minute read worth four bucks? Your call, but I liked it.
Thankless Job, also by Pat Lewis -- an older mini-comic (2004), this one with a much denser story. A temp screws up his data-entry job and unwittingly takes down the supervillain crime boss controlling the city. Funny, well-timed, a bit more simply drawn, with a plot that goes in unexpected directions.
Invincible # 35 by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley -- The almost-nothing-happens-while-everyone-sits-around-talking issue. Nicely done.
Dork # 11 by Evan Dorkin -- I've been reading Evan Dorkin's comics for something like 15 years now, and I'm sorry to say I don't think I have ever enjoyed one of his comics less than this one. The "this is so not funny it's funny" shtick is growing a bit old. Some of the gags in this issue are killer, but the rest is just filler.
Desolation Jones # 7 by Warren Ellis and Danijel Zezelj -- A new artist brings a new storyline and a new tone to this black-hearted espionage series. This issue just gets the new story rolling; there's really not enough to leave an impression. I think I'll have to wait until the entire story has been published in order to read this. Next time, I'll wait for the collected book version.
E-Man: Recharged by Nick Cuti and Joe Staton -- Yes! Any time E-Man returns to print is cause for celebration.
Wide Awake 666 -- A great little anthology, with more than 100 pages of full-color humor/horror comics for just $9.95, and a beautifully printed showcase for a wide range of modern cartooning styles. There's not a lot of depth here (most of the stories tap out at 2-3 pages), so the book won't exactly satisfy your cravings for plot, but it did introduce me to the work of a lot of great cartoonists, whose work I'll be looking for in the future.
