8:33a - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
Once again, Sherman Alexie has broken my heart, made me laugh, and lifted up my soul.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian -- Alexie's first novel for young adults -- doesn't pull any punches. It's an unflinching look at life on the Spokane Indian reservation, and how difficult it is to escape the poverty, alcoholism and tribalism that infect the people that have been imprisoned there.
While often depressing, the book is also at times both hilarious and inspiring. Junior Spirit is one of the most (pun intended) spirited narrators I have ever encountered in fiction. Sometimes he wants to lay down and die, but he refuses to give up, even though most of the people around him already have.
I've got Alexie's other 2007 novel -- Flight -- sitting here next to the computer. I probably shouldn't read two of his books back-to-back, but I may not be able to resist it. He's that good.
